2024 Q3 Retrospective
Posted 2024-09-20 03:00 ‐ 3 min read
It's been a very busy quarter, and I'm excited about its energy and momentum. The service went live in early July, and the Roadmap for July through September 2024 was published soon after. This is a sample of what we've accomplished:
- 80+ releases, bringing the project to just under 20,000 lines of Rust
- July milestones included calendar URLs and the lexicon reset
- August milestones include OAuth support and the Blue Badge release
- September milestones include the localization of both Blue Badge and Smoke Signal.
- I open sourced https://badge.blue/ and made it available on https://github.com/ngerakines/badgeblue
- Recorded a first look of https://aviary.domains/, a tool for sharing domains to use with handles. https://youtu.be/yixl2jrmbhs
I'm very happy and proud of the progress we've made. We've hit all of our milestones and even several stretch goals.
The ATProtocol OAuth spec sparked significant discussion and activity in the developer community. I'm delighted to share that Smoke Signal was among the first applications to support it and contribute to these discussions. The impact of OAuth in lowering the barrier to entry for users has been particularly noteworthy.
An influx of Brazilian users also surged and sustained activity in the ATMosphere, elevating localization support to the top of the priority list.
The Numbers
In an effort to be transparent about the service's usage and growth, I'll be posting quarterly metrics for handles, events, and RSVPs.
The number of handles that have used OAuth to connect to the service is 120.
The number of events created is 40.
The number of RSVPs created is 90.

This list may not be comprehensive, but here are some of the highlights:
